Presumably from the early days of bureaucracy in the teaching profession, this CD contains a list of registered teachers from 1917. The book was published by the Teachers Registration Council, and described as 'representative of the teaching profession'.
To be included in the list, teachers had to have fulfilled various conditions including being over 25 and able to pay the guinea fee. The list provides names, addresses (usually of their school), date of registration, and registration number. The names of registered teachers known to have died are differentiated by italics. The listing is alphabetical and the PDF file has a bookmark pane.
This is essentially an index or extract - the real Official Register, with its statements of a teacher's training and experience, being too lengthy for publication. This information could be requested by 'responsible persons' from the Council's Bedford Square offices.
As well as the list of teachers, you also get the names of the apointees to the Council up to the end of 1918, as well as various specialist committees. Interestingly, there was a quote even in those days - if the appointing body had two nominations, one had to be a woman. |
