Local Justices of the Peace play an important role in society, presiding over magistrates' courts. Rather than being qualified lawmakers, Justices of the Peace in our ancestors' time were influential people in their community who were elected to preside over Quarter Sections and other small courts to deal with minor crimes.

This unusual CD from S&N Genealogy covers every Justice of the Peace in England and Wales in the census year of 1911. Organised by alphabetical county, each Justice appears with their address, division (town or parish) and military rank if applicable, as many seem to be ex-servicemen.

Each name is also recorded with their date of appointment to the position, and interestingly, the date "when oaths were taken". An alphabetical index at the back and automatic search options can help you swiftly locate the names or areas you're looking for.

As well as discovering if your own ancestor was an appointed magistrate - a position of significant importance - the CD is also interesting if you had a black sheep forebear on the other side of the dock.
