For all those hunting for Shropshire ancestors during World War 1, this edition of Kelly's 1917 Directory of Shropshire on CD-ROM is a complete copy of the original document, apart from the omission of a single coloured map. Brimming with useful indexes, it offers an interesting account of the area and helpfully identifies the county's hundreds, poor law unions and parishes.

This edition begins with a full index to places arranged alphabetically, followed immediately by an index to the principal seats in Shropshire and their occupants, referenced to the places previously listed. Two commercial indexes to advertisers follow: the first arranged alphabetically by trading name and giving their trade description; and the second arranged by trade classification and giving their trading name. You'll certainly be able to find your shopkeeper ancestors here!

The directory includes alphabetically arranged accounts of places in the county, which detail the names of the residents, both private and those engaged in commerce and trade. The information given for each parish includes the parliamentary division of the county, the county court districts and diocese, archdeaconry and rural deanery, plus the names of the parish clerks and a list of the farm bailiffs of 'gentlemen farming their own land'. You also get a listing for the county council, with the names and addresses of the members and officials.

The directory has been created using digitally enhanced images of the original publication and can be searched by name. Major sections have also been bookmarked, making navigating the directory an easy task.
