Much like an Army List, any register that lists so much information on an organisation the size of the East India Company has got to be worth a look.

This register and directory captures a time when the EIC was at the height of its power and influence, responsible for British trade in India and Asia.

When you open the PDF file, you'll find seperate registers and indexes in the bookmarks, for the civil and military establishments of Bengal, Bombay Fort St George, Canton, St Helena, West Coast and also the EIC marines. These make up the bulk of the PDF, but if you are simply searching for one name, there's an easy-to-use search facility.

Each officer and servant listed has details of their military rank and date of appointment to the EIC included. There's also a register of recent casualties - helpful considering the amount of battles the EIC was involved in around the period - and a list of contemporary literature on India.

Though the register gives only basic facts, it's still an excellent starting point for your research if you have ancestors from this important organisation.
