ootsMagic version 3 UK edition is the latest edition of this popular family history program and is packed with numerous new features.

Main screen
There are three main views: pedigree, family and descendants. Simply click on the tabs to change the view. Double clicking on an individual’s name brings up the ‘Edit Person’ screen, and from this you can edit notes and details. In addition to the predefined facts, RootsMagic allows you to create facts of your own, with notes and sources for each and the option to include them in reports. A useful feature is that several databases or views can be opened at the same time. You can drag and drop people from one database to another.

Reports/charts
A huge range of charts and reports are

available, including ancestor and descendant charts, family group sheets, blank forms to print, individual summaries and narrative reports, and a handy relationship chart. The charts and reports can be colour-coded and photos, sound and background images may be added.

Publisher
You are able to produce a family history book from your database. You can include photos, documents and charts, as well as adding acknowledgments and a bibliography. You may print your book or save it as a portable document format (PDF) or rich text format (RTF) file.

Other features
Select ‘Search>History’ to view the most recently viewed people in your database.
Select ‘File>Import GEDCOM file’ to import an entire family tree quickly.
Select ‘File>Back-up’ to back up directly onto CD.
Create read-only CDs to share with other family members.
Select ‘Internet>Create’ to build a website and the instructions will guide you through the steps on how to publish a family tree and photos on a website.
Select ‘Search>Person List’ to search your entire database quickly.

All in all…
I enjoyed using the various features in RootsMagic 3 and found it user-friendly and great value for money. With the aid of the ‘Help’ tool, most family historians should find this program easy to use. The extensive storage capacity for unlimited people should also please those family historians with large trees.
