History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland

This title was published in four volumes, comprising some 3,000 pages in 1835 - all are reproduced on this CD. The 'commoners' referred to were men enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank, but uninvested with heritable honours. The text catalogues the lineage of hundreds of such families and illustrates them with their coat of arms.

A typical entry concerns the Annesley family from the Oxfordshire village of Bletchingdon. This lineage goes all the way back to the times of William the Conqueror, beginning with the Richard de Annesley. This culminates with Arthur Annesley, his wife Catherine - daughter of Admiral Sir Charles Hardy - and their six living children.

These volumes are likely to interest those with prosperous ancestry and those whose ancestors might have worked for such families.
