The Genealogist Update- many 1841/51 census indexes now online

TheGenealogist, the online data service from S&N, has now uploaded complete indexes for the 1841 and 1851 census for London, Lancashire and Yorkshire, adding to their rapidly growing collection of census indexes and other data.

This means that London now has indexes from 1841-91 complete and a partial 1901 index. These are available as individual subscriptions or as part of their ‘All Inclusive Subscription’ which is better value at £4.66 a month. This gives you complete access to virtually all the data, including many other census indexes; transcripts and images; BMD indexes; parish records; land records; directories and each new set of data, which are constantly being added. The new census databases have improved searching, including phonetic searching to find similar names with differing spellings and a nickname feature that allows you to search for all the known variants of a forename.

British family history enthusiasts check census data for S&N using tools available online at ukindexer.co.uk.

TheGenealogist site is unique as it is the only commercial site using UK volunteers to check the census indexes and transcripts. UKindexer.co.uk is a website that they have set up to provide some impressive online tools to assist these volunteers in checking and correcting the transcripts. The site also provides dedicated bulletin boards to provide support and help to the volunteers. Originally all the indexing was performed by volunteers but, due to the scale of the task, transcriptions are now (as with all the other commercial companies) carried out in the Far East.

London 1841 Census index

Researches can now search the 1841 census indexes for London (and other counties)
most economically with an 'all inclusive' subscriptions.

S&N have developed a range of custom designed software tools to look for potential errors in the transcriptions when they receive them. These bespoke programs are used to look for any potential problems in names, ages, occupations, places, relationships and gender. Any possible anomalies identified by the programs are then brought to the attention of the 4,000+ volunteers that have registered to work on the census. Volunteers are rewarded by a credit system, which allows them to exchange the credits they earn for S&N vouchers.

In addition to the volunteers, S&N also have a team of full time staff involved in checking accuracy and guiding the volunteers through the indexing and checking. As far as I am aware they are the only company to perform such extensive checks on the transcribed data that they have commissioned.
