The directory consists of a street index with an alphabetical list of residents’ names and a court directory of alphabetically listed surnames with their corresponding addresses.

Published at the beginning of the 19 th century, these official handbooks published on behalf of the local councils were intended to showcase the area and be used as tourist guides. They provide a wealth of information with brief histories, maps, photographs, information about local traditions, worthies, literary associations and usually plenty of local adverts. The Northampton and Surroundings volume was published in 1910, the Huntingdon and the Great Ouse with St Neots and St Ives book was published in 1905 and includes an Ordnance map of the area.
