This book details the 800 civil servants employed in the India Office on 1st April 1924. They range from the Secretary of State and Private Secretaries down to clerical staff, messengers and cleaners. Certain parts of the Establishment, such as the 'copying room' with its 60 typists, were exclusively staffed by female employees.

For example, Katherine Moore was born on 23rd March 1882, and joined the department as a typist on the 23rd July 1908, she was paid a salary of 46 shillings per week, plus an allowance of 80 shillings per annum as assistant to the Private Secretary.

Originally published for use within the India Office, this book gives a fascinating insight into the lives and careers of the Office's employees.
