This is an index of names with references to sources containing genealogical information. The published documentation cited includes Burke's Landed Gentry, Burke's Colonial Gentry, the volumes of the Harleian Society and the Surtees Society, county visitations, and many less well-known books. The Genealogist's Guide was published in 1903, and so only refers to sources that were in existence at that time.

Nearly 10,000 surnames are detailed within the book's 895 pages. Some have lengthy lists of sources attributed to them, whereas those interested in the name Gartside are simply referred to a Chetham Society volume, as well as to Fishwick's History of Rochdale. This index is less likely to assist those researching working class and 'ag lab' ancestors, although it will help family historians to discover new sources.
