This weighty tome of 816 pages contains a vast amount of details for genealogists whose ancestors worked in various roles in the legal profession, in 1856. We would expect to find judges, Queen's Counsel, attorneys and notaries, but the lists of shorthand writers and vestry clerks are a welcome bonus. A large part of the text is devoted to the 60 circuits of the county court, with the judge, treasurer, clerks, assistant clerks and bailiffs of each circuit.

But the book branches out beyond England, including members of the Manz Bar, and personnel involved in the legal system of the East Indies. For example, Charles S Hogg, Standing Cousel to the East India Company, is shown as one of over 20 advocates of the Supreme Court of Judicature in Calcutta.
