This book was published in 1910, and contains abstracts of monumental inscriptions from over 50 churches and burial grounds within the historic City of London. For example, in the church of All Hallows the Great, which was demolished in 1895, the recorded inscriptions include altar tombs, flatstones, headstones and footstones.

Perusal of this volume's index suggests that around 800 different surnames are recorded, while the deceased came from far and wide - John Skitt, buried in 1833 at St Bartholomew the Great, was a native of Warrington. Of course, closures and demolition of churches and the ravages of time probably mean that many of these monuments no longer exist. This is an interesting source for researchers with London ancestry, and particularly for those who were affluent enough to be able to afford a monument or memorial.
