Published in 1917, this volume's main focus is the history and personnel of the Tyneside Irish brigade. Its five battalions were enrolled in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and fought in the Battle of the Somme. The text contains biographies of its men of military eminence, including their background , military career and family information. Most are photographed in their military uniforms.

Prominence is also given to Irishmen who were awarded military honours, especially those who won the Victoria Cross. These were both officers and men, and included Private John Caffery, who was in the 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment and is of particular interest as he was the youngest soldier in the army to win the VC.

The volume concludes with a 'Who's Who' of the Irish on Tyneside, including politicians, local dignitaries and brigade founders.
